Whether you have an older vehicle or you’re in the market for a new Jeep in Michigan City, one of the most important maintenance items on any car is checking the oil. Checking the oil level in your vehicle is a quick and easy way to ensure your vehicle is operating correctly. Though this procedure may vary slightly from vehicle to vehicle, depending on its age, here are the basic steps you will need to follow.
When to Check
Depending on the type of oil you’re using in your engine, it may be a good idea to let the engine warm up a little before checking the oil level. If you’re using conventional oil, your readings will be similar no matter what temperature the engine is. If you do need to check the oil level when the engine is hot, be careful not to touch the oil or the dipstick with your bare hands, as these items can be well over 100 degrees.
Gain Access
When your new Jeep in Michigan City engine has reached the appropriate temperature, turn the engine off (if it was running) and open the hood. Then, locate the oil dipstick, which will be marked by a small handle near the main engine block and is often brightly colored. Put your index finger through the handle and pull until it comes loose from its mount. This pull may take some force, especially if it’s been a while since you last checked your oil.
Pull and Check
Slowly and carefully pull the dipstick out of its tube, being careful not to touch it with your bare skin. Using a clean paper towel, wipe off the end of the dipstick, then re-insert it into the tube until it latches back into place. Pull the dipstick out again, then look carefully at the level of the oil on the dipstick.
